Nara Ramen Haku

At time of writing it's been a very long time since I've gone to this event, so in the interest of brevity I will reduce this to just pictures. Stay tuned for the next shop visit for a real review!

Mengyu

I stumbled upon a shop called Mengyu, selling noodles and beef. Of all things I went with their curry mazesoba.

The Bowl
The noodles were yellow and springy; not too remarkable on their own but better with the light aromas of the curry sauce mixed in. The pork squares were plump and juicy, and the vegetables like potato and squash were unusual but a welcome addition.

On the side was a lemon-spice called "lemosco", that was as strange and interesting as it sounded.

Marotei

A friend of mine had long suggested I visit Marotei, a shop that is not strictly a ramen shop, but a curry noodle shop. I ordered the standard dish, curry noodles.

The Bowl
Unlike other curry noodle dishes I've had, this was not sweet but rather savory, not too thick but with a smidge of spice and a peppery roughness. The noodles were long and flat, and there was a single bridge of chashu, laying along the bowl's diameter. At the end throwing in a bit of cayenne pepper added a final kick.

Would I Go Again?
Yes, it was solid.

Should You Go?
I recommend it for any curry lover.

Katmandu Ramen

Today's shop is a bit different from the normal shops I go to. It was created by a guy who originally created a curry shop, so Katmandu is almost more of a curry shop than a ramen shop. Since I love curry, I was pretty excited and ordered the special curry ramen.

The Bowl
Sure enough, this was pretty much a bowl of straight-up Indian curry. It was thick, but not too spicy. Most curry ramen shops I've been to tend to thin out or sweeten their curry, so I was happy to see a place present a nice and rich curry. The noodles were medium and curly, a nice alternative to rice or naan. I really loved the dry piece of spiced tikka on the side; I would have taken plenty more of that if I could have.

Would I Go Again?
Maybe, I'm curious about some of their other dishes.

Should You Go?
I recommend this place for curry fans.

Bassanova

Bassanova will always stand strongly in my mind as one of the early bowls that pushed me along on my quest for ramen. It was one of the great ramen shops I discovered when I moved to Tokyo, and on one rainy day a friend and I ventured out to try it. Living away from Tokyo so long, it has been hard to try it again, but on one of my semi-regular trips I decided I needed to make an effort to stop by. Both this time and last I felt I needed to get Bassanova's specialty: green curry soba.

The Bowl
This was no watered-down curry; this was a powerful green curry that could stand on its own. There was just a bit of salt and spice that stood out, coating the medium flat noodles. There were a handful of small, succulent pieces of chashu. Slices of chicken in the soup reminded me of the curry noodle khao soi that I had in my recent trip to Thailand. This is a stellar model of the highs curry ramen can achieve.

Would I Go Again?
Yes.

Chuka Soba Niboshiya

A while back I had a friend living out in Minami Tatsumi, a place only known for being one end of the Sennichimae subway line. I have no other reason and therefore chance to go there, so on a visit to my friend, we swung by a shop featured in Ramen Walker: Chuka Soba Niboshiya. Despite being called "niboshiya", meaning "sardine shop", Ramen Walker recommended the spicy curry soba.

The Bowl
This was a wonderful smorgasbord of vegetables in a robust curry soup. There was just a bit of spice in the broth that was delicately balanced to be thick but drinkable. The medium noodles were good but let slightly too much of the soup roll off. The toppings added texture to the bowl. Baby corn and peppers had a delightful crunch, and the juicy squares of stewed pork had a nice bit of chew.

Would I Go Again?
If I'm ever on that end of the Sennichimae line, I'll stop by again.

Should You Go?
If you're living close by, it's definitely worth a stop.

Kyu Beer Belly

I have a few different things I love in life, and only rarely do they come together. A while ago one of the Beer Bellys, the bars run by Osaka craft brewery Minoh Beer, moved a few doors down from where it had used to be. In its place, the people behind Mitsukabozu created a ramen shop. Being too lazy to change the sign, they named it Kyu Beer Belly, or "old Beer Belly".

Kyu Beer Belly's specialty is shrimp miso curry ramen. In other words, they took every good thing that could be in ramen, and put them together. They offered cheese as a topping and pickles on the side, both of which I partook in.

Place a red marker for rice, yellow, for cheese, and green for pickles.

The Bowl
Perhaps only the geniuses behind Mitsukabozu could make a bowl this erratic work. The core flavor was a rich miso, with light notes of curry that were kept in check. After each slurp, the shrimp came in as an aftertaste, reminding me it was there. The noodles were medium thick, and straight; built for the thick broth they sat in. The cheese was pretty strange too; it was a parmesan-like cheese you'd expect to have grated over pasta. Along with the shrimp, it gave the whole dish a creamier, pasta-like quality, and it was especially good when mixed in with everything else.

Would I Go Again?
I would definitely love to, but the hours are terrible and also the shop closed.

Should You Go?
If it was still open, you should have.

Ramen Sengoku Day 1

Another ramen festival! These are getting more frequent in Kansai, and as long as they keep having them, I'll keep going. This time is the Ramen Sengoku in Nishi-Umeda, manned by a variety of Kansai ramen shops, and a couple out-of-towners. I didn't expect I could hit this event more than the Dotonbori Ramen Festa, but once was not quite enough.

For my first stop, as tends to be the case at these things, I had an miso from Osaka shop Gachinko Ramen Do Hiragi.

The Bowl
This was a sweet and milky, smooth miso. There was a healthy dose of pepper and cooked onions on top of the flanks of menma and cabbage. The noodles were miso-style yellow and curly, and a great mass of fatty bacon-style chashu was shipwrecked on one side of the bowl. A solid hearty bowl to make sure I'll be hurting after my second.

Bowl number two was to be found at chain shop Norio. I've had their chicken ramen once upon a time, but I was much more intrigued at their curry ramen made with Awaji Island onions.

The Bowl
This was an oily curry, with a bit of spice to it. There was an egg placed right on top, which helped the noodles meld together and drag the curry with it. The chashu was a bit dry, but the fried potato bits on the side became a nice mixer and helped the bowl stand out.
