Ramen Tsurumusha

I happened to be in Kyoto, and I used the opportunity to stop at Tsurumusha, where I ordered the standard ramen.

The Bowl
It was a cloudy chicken broth, with clam mixed into the tare. It ended up being a light, buttery blend of chicken and clam, along with a spice I couldn't quite put my finger on. The noodles were square and tasted as buttery as the broth. My favorite topping ended up being the egg, oozing yellow into the soup.

Noko Tori Paitan Ramen Misora

I went ramen hunting with a friend in Kyoto, and we ended up at Misora, a shop I didn't realize at first was related to nearby shop Mitsuru. Knowing that, I decided to instead of ramen, order their Noko Tori Tsukemen Black.

The Bowl
The broth was a strong and salty shoyu, with a heavy background flavor of chicken. The noodles were one of my favorite styles - round and smooth, ultra slurpable. The chashu was nice and tender, tasting strongly of ginger.

Ramen Derby

Another year, another Ramen Derby! My first stop was for a niboshi bowl from Kyoto's Seabura no Kami and Kataguruma.

The Bowl
It was super oily, but not overly fishy. Filled with flat, curly noodles that looked like they were maybe handmade. A pretty solid first bowl overall.

Next up was a collaboration between Kinsei ramen and Torakichi.

The Bowl
As expected of Kinsei, it was a lighter-than-air shio that didn't weigh me down and was perfect as a chaser for the niboshi. The noodles were nice and firm, perhaps even too much for the broth.

Tantanmen × Yume azito

In Kyoto without a ton of time, I looked for a place where I could get good bowl on my way to where I was going. I found Tantanmen x Yume azito, a basement shop hidden away not far from Shijo Station. I ordered the tantanmen, but not just any tantanmen: the white sesame soymilk tantanmen.

The Bowl
This was one thick bowl. The soymilk gave the broth a creamy feel, and it was almost like eating noodles soaked in a sesame paste gravy. The noodles themselves were in thin bunches that brought the milkiness of the broth with them. The soup was covered by ra-yu, too, which allowed it to become thinner and more drinkable as it went on, even if by the end it was mostly salt.

Would I Go Again?
I enjoyed the wacky bowl but I don't make it to Kyoto enough to merit another visit, even if the place hadn't closed for good.

Should You Go?
If it were still open I would recommend it for anyone who likes thick ramen with a bit of spice.

Kyo Tsukemen Tsurukame

A trip to Kyoto and a chance to try more Kyoto ramen! This time I visited Kyo Tsukemen Tsurukame and their Nishikyo miso tantan tsukemen.

The Bowl
Just as it looks in the photo above, this tantan tsukemen was more smooth than spicy. There was just a tickle of spice, which was fine since the sesame and rayu did the job of keeping the bowl flavorful and interesting. The noodles were fat and grainy, and there were thin slices of chashu, too, that were juicy and brimming with flavor.

Would I Go Again?
Yes.

はい。

Should You Go?
A good stop for anyone looking for something a little different in Kyoto.

Chuka Soba Takayasu

Continuing on my first trip to Ichijoji, I finished my hike and was ready for dinner, i.e. round two. My second shop was Ichijoji staple Takayasu. Takayasu is known for their tonkotsu ramen but perhaps even more than that for their gigantic pieces of karaage. Even though I wasn't that hungry, I found myself ordering a set that came with both.

The Bowl
The broth was a greasy, stinky tonktosu. It was messy and salty, and pretty delicious if a bit generic. Eating the thin noodles without sipping too much of the soup cut out enough of the salt to make it more palatable.

The karaage were big, hulking chunks of chicken with fresh, crispy skin. The pieces were coated in curry powder, and though the inside was a bit dry, overall they were quite good.

Would I Go Again?
Yeah, especially when if I'm very hungry.

Should You Go?
I recommend it for those who are hungry; I hear students enjoy this place because of how cheap it is to stay full for days.

Chinyu

One area I had been meaning to go for ramen since I first moved to Osaka was Ichijoji. Ichijoji is a small area in northern Kyoto city that is famous for not much outside of ramen. My plan was to visit one shop, go for a hike, and then make another stop at another shop. With that in mind, I picked somewhere pretty digestible at first: chuka soba shop Chinyu.

The Bowl
This was kind of similar to another Kyoto bowl I had recently, Shinpuku Saikan. It was a classic chuka soba, but where Shinpuku Saikan had a dark broth, Chinyu's was a cloudier chicken broth, with the same amount of pork back fat floating in it. It was simple, with standard chashu and firm noodles: a nice foundation on which to go hiking.

Would I Go Again?
I wouldn't trek all the way out to Ichijoji for it, but I think they have other shops I would consider stopping in.

Should You Go?
If you're looking for a sessionable bowl in Ichijoji, this place might be for you.
