Ramen Sengoku Day 1

Another ramen festival! These are getting more frequent in Kansai, and as long as they keep having them, I'll keep going. This time is the Ramen Sengoku in Nishi-Umeda, manned by a variety of Kansai ramen shops, and a couple out-of-towners. I didn't expect I could hit this event more than the Dotonbori Ramen Festa, but once was not quite enough.

For my first stop, as tends to be the case at these things, I had an miso from Osaka shop Gachinko Ramen Do Hiragi.

The Bowl
This was a sweet and milky, smooth miso. There was a healthy dose of pepper and cooked onions on top of the flanks of menma and cabbage. The noodles were miso-style yellow and curly, and a great mass of fatty bacon-style chashu was shipwrecked on one side of the bowl. A solid hearty bowl to make sure I'll be hurting after my second.

Bowl number two was to be found at chain shop Norio. I've had their chicken ramen once upon a time, but I was much more intrigued at their curry ramen made with Awaji Island onions.

The Bowl
This was an oily curry, with a bit of spice to it. There was an egg placed right on top, which helped the noodles meld together and drag the curry with it. The chashu was a bit dry, but the fried potato bits on the side became a nice mixer and helped the bowl stand out.

Kaizoku

Osaka truly is the land of late night ramen shops. All across Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori are a plethora of shops that open no earlier than 7PM, and stay open at least as long as the Dotonbori Starbcuks. One drunken night I happened to stumble across a new one: Hamaguri Ramen Kaizoku. Kaizoku is a seafood restaurant in Namba that decided to open a ramen shop with a single menu: clam ramen. I stumbled in, ordered it, and was given a bonus side of shellfish rice.

The Bowl
Kaizoku offered a light and salty broth, with a hearty dose of clam. This is one of the fishiest bowls I've had, and it didn't go great with the amount I had to drink. A squeeze of lemon made it a bit more bearable at that point in the night. The noodles were thin and light, and pretty easy to down. The ramen had a few clams in it as well, though I felt the rice bowl matched its toppings better. The whole thing wasn't bad per se, I just can't handle that much seafood after drinking.

Would I Go Again?
Nah; I stick to something lighter when it's almost morning.

Should You Go?
If you've got the drunken munchies and love seafood this is your place.

Ginjo Ramen Kubota

Kyoto for me is an untapped paradise of ramen. It's not that there's so many more shops than in Osaka, it's just that I don't go often enough to appreciate them. One night I had plans in Kyoto and did some investigating for a shop to visit when I discovered Ginjo Ramen Kubota. Kubota is a miso tsukemen shop, a double rarity in Kansai. With my love for miso and tsukemen, how could I go wrong?

The Bowl
The soup was rich if a bit oily, a strong miso with a slight note of sweetness. There was just a tinge of spiciness; the right amount to keep it interesting. The noodles were very thick, but they slurped up the miso briskly. The chashu was a bit greasy on its own, but worked well covered in miso. The only minor flaw was at the end the soup-wari was a bit grainy from all of the miso remnants at the end.

Ramen Kozo

Fukushima has long been a bastion of good ramen, and the Ra-sai stamp rally has been a good motivator for me to visit shops that I haven't gotten around to yet. For my fifth stamp I visited new super-porky tonkotsu shop Kozo. Just looking at the photos online had me intimidated: would this be as extreme as Muteppo? I went in and ordered the extra-thick ramen.

The Bowl
As I expected and hoped, the broth was a thick, porky sludge. Surprisingly, though, it was very drinkable. The noodles were short and curly, coating their wide surface area with pork and fat as I dragged them out of the bowl. Breaks from the weight of the soup were provided by the egg and slices of chashu. The chashu was a little tough, but it was lighter than most, providing a good balance to the bowl. This was a bowl not for the weak of heart, and though it hit me hard afterwards, it really managed to be drinkable despite being so rich.

Would I Go Again?
Yes.

Should You Go?
Yes.

Menya Hoi

I just got back from my trip abroad, and unusual to most trips, I landed at Itami Airport. This normally doesn't change much; it's about the same amount of time for me to get home as it would be from Kansai Airport. But Itami happens to be near Hotarugaike Station, home of several good ramen shops, including Kansai miso king Mitsukabozu. I walked with my luggage and when I arrived at the door this is what I saw:

There was a fire! They're closed for a while, and at time of writing they are still closed. Dejected and disappointed, I wasn't going home with an empty stomach. I headed to nearby also-great Menya Hoi, where I had been just a couple weeks before. Earlier I ordered the tori paitan, so this time I decided to go with the clear fish tori seitan.

The Bowl
This was a different beast from what I ordered last time. The broth was a simple oily soup, with simple fish flavors, and chock full of globs of fish oil. The noodles were thin and slippery, similar to the kind I would normally see in a shio bowl. The toppings were the same all-star lineup that were offered last time: seasoned duck, and a ginger-laden pork meatball.

Would I Go Again?
Yes, but I would go for the paitan again next time.

Should You Go?
Yes

Rokurinsha

In the recent years, one of the larger booms in the ramen world is the innovation of the double soup tsukemen. As opposed to most ramen and tsukemen, double soup - most often seen in gyokai tonkotsu broth - is a combination of two soups, in addition to the standard tare, noodles, and toppings that belong in a bowl. This innovation is credited to legendary shop Rokurinsha.

Rokurinsha opened in 2005 in Tokyo, and after a few months of trouble created and debuted their signature double soup. It exploded. The lines became so long, that they ended up closing the shop so as not to cause trouble to their neighbors, and moved to Tokyo Ramen Street. When I lived in Tokyo, I waited on the hour or so long line to taste this piece of ramen history. I enjoyed it but wasn't moved to wait on a line like that again.

In February I embarked on a trip, and imagine my surprise when I saw a Rokurinsha in Haneda airport in Tokyo. When you're by the gates at an airport, you don't get quite the same rush as you would in a train station, so I was served immediately. I went for the standard tsukemen, happy I could mark this place off and present it to you.

The Bowl
This was the Tokyo-style gyokai tonkotsu tsukemen I wax nostalgic about. The broth managed to be rich and full without being a swampy mess. It was sweet with just the right amount of pepper; a delicate balance of spice and sweet. The noodles too, were chewy with just the right amount of resistance before tearing through. Tokyo is full of great tsukemen shops like this, but I certainly tip my hat to Rokurinsha for inventing and producing an innovative, delicious bowl.

Would I Go Again?
I will stop by on every flight that passes through Haneda.

Should You Go?
This is a must for anyone in the right terminal of Haneda Airport.

Menya Hoi

Stop number four on the Ra-sai stamp rally! I trekked a little bit out of the way up to Toyonaka to once again meet up with Philoramen and try tori paitan shop Hoi. They advertised a thick and thin soup, both recommended, so I leaned as I always do for the thicker one.

The Bowl
The broth was a thick and syrupy chicken; rich without being too powerful, with a bit of a woody taste to it. The noodles were medium size and tasted almost like soba noodles. It was a flavor that stood out through the goopy soup.

The toppings were not to be outdone in Hoi's bowl, though. Hiding just below the surface was a slice of duck. Unusual for ramen, it was well seasoned with pepper and other spices. There was a ginger-filled meatball that tasted like a bite of Chinese xiao long bao. The chicken went the other route; simple and clean with a chew that let me forget the amount of salt and fat I was taking in.

Would I Go Again?
Yes, and I have since.

Should You Go?
Yes.

はい。

Menya 7.5Hz+

I had just recently visited Menya 7.5Hz+, when I found I was due for another visit. Ramen Adventures blogger Brian was in town, and with just a couple of hours before his train left, we had to think fast to find an interesting shop. I was happy to introduce Brian to the Osakan specialty Takaida-kei ramen, and what better place than Menya 7.5Hz+? I had just tried the ramen again recently, so I went for their advertised Takaida tsukemen this time.

The Bowl
Wow, they really just took their soup and separated it from the noodles. These noodles were a bit thicker than the already thick noodles that they use for the ramen, which meant they were were fat and firm. They did not benefit from having lots of salt soaked in them as Takaida-kei ramen usually does, so it fell a little flat overall.

Would I Go Again?
Yes, but I would switch back to the ramen.

Should You Go?
Yes; get the ramen.
