Komen Tamaran

A new Jiro style ramen shop opened up in Taisho a while ago. I in theory had been meaning to visit, but in reality had been putting it off a bit. Partially because the new shop replaced delicious Ramen Do, but really because I can only very occasionally handle Jiro style ramen. I saw a magazine really pushing Komen Tamaran's miso, though, and that was enough of a reason to actually push myself to make the trip.

The Bowl
As you'd expect from any Jiro style, the broth was a murky mix of, oil, garlic, and fat, and in this case, salty, strong miso, too. It wasn't bad overall, and it was filled with curly, ultra-thick ropes, that on their own seemed like a great idea, but were a too hard even for this flavorful mess. The chashu was fatty and tender, but was a hit a little too hard by the garlic punch in the soup and in the air.

Would I Go Again?
It was fine, but I'll find a new shop next time I'm going to make a challenge at Jiro style ramen.

Should You Go?
If you're a big fan of Jiro in Osaka, it's worth stop.

Tenyo

A friend and I were going to go drinking in Taisho, but beforehand we needed to get food. A new ramen-pasta fusion shop opened by Wadachi was in Sakaisuji Honmachi so we took a trip over there.

Closed for Obon. Well, just down the road is a shop called Norio we can try.

Strike two. Well, Antaga is a solid chicken shop in Taisho, so we can just eat when we get there.

No luck tonight. At the very least, I know some friends who swear by Tenyo, a chain of garlicky ramen shops that have a branch in Taisho.

And it was open! We went in starving, and I ordered the regular old ramen.

The Bowl
This was the kind of ramen you get at a generic chain. It was thin, and its unique flavor was salt and oil. I could appreciate this ramen before I got all snobby and started a blog, but it's a bit harder to now. True to its branding, garlic really helped the bowl out a lot. It's no surprise the bowl marked it as being related to Oriental Cafe.

Would I Go Again?
Nah.

Should You Go?
Nah.

Ramen Do

Taisho is an area that doesn't have a lot of stuff, but what it has is good. I visited a chicken ramen shop on its one year anniversary a few months ago, and this time I was visiting a different chicken shop a month after open. The shop owner recommended the paitan shoyu and the chicken chuka soba, and I went with the shoyu.

The Bowl
The broth was thin, with light chicken flavors, but packed a bit of a bunch in its aftertaste. The noodles were thin and held together strong, making it easy to take large bunches at a time. The chicken chashu was extra good: it was a chewy and well-seasoned piece of chicken tataki, a perfect addition to ramen. Overall a very good bowl of chicken ramen.

Would I Go Again?
I would have, but Ramen Do has sadly closed by the time of writing.

Should You Go?
You can't, because it's gone.

Hi wa Mata Noboru

Finally, a new shop close to where I live! I don't normally have much of a reason to visit Taisho, but with a new ramen shop there I have an excuse to pass by Little Okinawa, but unfortunately no excuse to eat there. Hi wa Mata Noboru specializes in sardine ramen and tsukemen, and I decided to go with the tsukemen.

The Bowl
The broth started off with a strong sardine kick. It was thin for tsukemen but flavorful. The same cannot be said of the noodles - they were super thick, which mind have worked well for another broth, but with one this thin they often ended up cold and a little bland. There was plenty of chashu too, but unfortunately that didn't stand out either. Not inedible by any means, but not a standout bowl either.

Would I Go Again?
Nah.

Should You Go?
You can skip this one.

Mengumi Antaga Taisho

I was hungry on a rainy day and wanted to see if there were any recent new shops. I discovered Mengumi Antaga Taisho, a chicken ramen shop in Taisho. I saw the entry for Antaga and thought it was opening day, but when I got there I was surprised to learn that it was actually the first anniversary. How did I go a full year without realizing there was a shop like this in Taisho? Antaga was created by a cook who left heralded chicken shops Menya Taku and Men Life Taku. He wanted to start a ramen shop in Taisho, where he was born and raised, and that gave us Antaga.

The Bowl
Just like Men Life Taku, Antaga offered a rich and refreshing chicken broth. It was just a little thick, salty, with a slight sweet edge. The noodles were thin and short; they weren't chewy but tasted a lot like soba. A solid chicken bowl all around, but I hesitate to say it's as good as the shops that bred it.

Would I Go Again?
Maybe; but it's tough when I have Men Life Taku so close.

Should You Go?
It's one of the best places in Taisho; good if you're near the Kyocera Dome.

Manten

Normally my trips to get ramen take me north; be it deeper into the heart of Osaka or all the way up to Umeda.  Today I decided to go to a place a bit west, by the not-so-exciting Taisho Station on the not-so-exciting Osaka loop line.

Manten is in a small alleyway, and offers shoyu tonkotsu ramen, a combination of shoyu and tonkotsu that is the base for styles such as Wakayama-style and Tokushima-style ramen.

Manten is in an alleyway just west of Manten Station.

The Bowl
The broth was shoyu tonkotsu, and I couldn't really pin down which it tasted of more.  It was really rich , but you could taste the soy sauce and tonkotsu both very well.  The noodles were thin and covered with onions.  There were bean sprouts as well, and the menma, which tasted somehow different from normal, was very good.  To top it off, the chashu was thick and melt-in-your-mouth tender.

Would I Go Again?
Yeah, there's not a ton of shoyu tonkotsu places and this was really good.

Should You Go?
Yeah.  You can go on your next routine trip to Taisho Station!
