Tsukemen TETSU

Every once in a while a bowl from Tokyo makes it down to Kansai. In the Hankyu Sanbangai food court, a tsukemen chain from Tokyo opened up: Tsukemen TETSU. I couldn't make it on the opening day, but just the day after I showed up to try their tsukemen.

The Bowl
This was some Tokyo style gyokai tonkotsu tsukemen, through and through. There are plenty of good bowls in Osaka but sometimes it's good to try one more heavily influenced from the birthplace. TETSU's broth was rich and fishy; not quite as thick nor as sweet as other similar bowls. The fat noodles sparkled in the underground mall's light. A thick piece of chashu bobbed up and down in the soup, but overall its taste was overtaken by the broth.

Would I Go Again?
TETSU was solid, but with so many other tsukemen options around, I don't see myself making another trip.

Should You Go?
This is a good option if you're feeling tsukemen while browsing the Umeda food court.

Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle - Day 7

Sadly, it's time for my final visit to the Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle. Seven trips isn't too bad. I ended with a bowl of miso ramen from Misono Maruesu.

The Bowl
Maruesu provided a cloudy miso broth, made better by the splash of rayu they offered on the side. The noodles were thick and looked handcut. These were the fattest noodles I'd seen at the event, and they were delicious, if too much for the broth.

Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle - Day 6

Day 6 at the Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle. This time I just had Tokyo Sabar's saba dashi ramen.

The Bowl
On its face this was a light shio, but one sip made it clear how permeated with saba it was. The noodles were, like the soup, nearly clear, and covered with bits of the same taste. There was a piece of grilled saba as well. Even though the flavor was at its core the same as the soup, the barely crispy skin and soft insides was an interesting change of texture.

Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle - Day 5

More and more bowls at the Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle. first up was a rich chicken shoyu with barbecue pork from Junk Story.

The Bowl
As opposed to Junk Story's usual clear-as-day shio, this was a heavy chicken gravy. The medium-sized noodles glopped on to each other using the molasses-like soup as glue. As advertised in the dish name, the charred slices of pork managed to cut through the broth's weight.

Junk Story

Next up was a simpler bowl: Taiwan maze soba from Kokoro.

The Bowl
This was maybe the spiciest bowl I had at the battle so far. It wasn't super hot, but had a nice kick. The noodles stuck to the bits of onions and seaweed, thanks to the sticky sheen applied from the raw egg. This wasn't my favorite bowl of Taiwan maze soba, but a good one for the festival.

Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle - Day 4

Another trip to the Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle! This time just a stop at Musashi.

The Bowl
This was a standard miso, rich with the taste of the menma that came in chewy strips and was scattered about the bowl. The noodles were curly, yellow, and full of bounce. Overall this was no standout bowl, but it was a nice break from some of the other ramen I had tried at the festival.

Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle - Day 3

Day 3 of the Tenkatoitusu Ramen Battle! First up was Onomichi ramen Koh.

The Bowl
It turns out that thin, hoison sauce-tasting shoyu broth warms you quite up on a cold day. There was just a bit of pork back fat, much less than the bowls I had in Onomichi. This worked out though, as it left me satisfied and hungry for another bowl.

My next bowl was at Gachinko Ramen Michi Hiiragi.

The Bowl
A meat-laden shish kebab? Now that's what I call ramen. The soup here was like liquid fat with a dose of garlic. I don't know if it was made to be drank, but it worked well as a dipping oil for the various meats and veggies that came with the dish. Not too surprising, the crispy skinned karaage and fatty square of bacon were the highlights.

Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle - Day 2

Day 2 at the Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle. Let's get into it then.

First up was golden chicken chuka soba from Yamagata Shinshunya.

The Bowl
A light, shoyu broth with the simple taste of chicken oil glazing the top, topped off with a dash of pepper. The noodles were fat and curly, and they worked well despite the simplicity of the broth. Chewy bits of motsu closed off the bowl.

Bowl number two was Keika Ramen from Kumamoto.

The Bowl
Even though I haven't been to Kumamoto, I'm familiar with the style. Garlicky tonkotsu with a hard-boiled egg plopped right in the middle. Cabbage, seaweed, and most scrumptiously thick slices of chashu with charred edges.

Tenkatoitsu Ramen Battle - Day 1

Ramen festivals in Nishiumeda have started to become an annual event. They happen to be very convenient for me, so whenever they occur I make frequent trips to them.

First up was Ganja's seafood tonkotsu chashu ramen.

The Bowl
A nice, cloudy fishy bowl to warm my spirits at the first day at this festival. Nothing is more welcoming in a bowl than a large slice of chashu, fresh with grill marks.

Hakata Shinpu Ramen Shokudo

In the basement of Lucua in Osaka Station, a new set of trendy restaurants opened. A Mexican place, and a French place, among them, and of course, a ramen shop: Hakata Shinpu Ramen Shokudo. Ramen Shokudo is a standard-ish Hakata tonkotsu chain that offered black and white versions of their tonkotsu. I decided to try the black.

The Bowl
Ramen Shokudo brought forth a serviceable tonkotsu. It was oily and fatty in the way a tonkotsu is supposed to be, but not in a way that would elevate it above any other chain. The roasted garlic ma-yu oil was a nice topper, and the noodles were hard just as I ordered them. This was a bowl that did not disappoint me, but I did not go in with super high expectations.

Would I Go Again?
It was fine, but, nah.

Should You Go?
It's not mandatory.

Men no Kuni

There can only be so much time between when a miso ramen shop opens in Osaka and when I visit it. This time the new shop is Men no Kuni, a second shop of the Namba miso joint. It resides in Osaka Ekimae Building #3, along with several other restaurants, ramen or otherwise. I kind of knew what I was getting into here; I ordered the recommended Hokkaido miso ramen and sat patiently in my seat.

The Bowl
This was a loud bowl of miso, salty and strong to match the greasy but pleasant vibes of the other restaurants in the basement food court. The noodles were fat and twisted; the ideal vessel for the oily soup. Fried bits of garlic sat atop like peanuts on a sundae. They provided texture to the broth. A fat piece of pork sat half-sunken, not tender but not tough either, and with just the slightest bit of sweetness.

Would I Go Again?
This was a tasty bowl of miso...but if I'm in Umeda I'll probably end up at legendary Mitsukabozu Kamoshi.

Should You Go?
It's a solid shop for anyone craving miso.

Ramen Sengoku Day 2

I wasn't initially planning on going to Ramen Sengoku twice, but when there are ten shops showing off their specialties, who am I to say no? The day previous I went by myself, but today I took a stop by with Philoramen.

First up today was Zundoya. I've always been a fan of Zundoya's dedication to Hakata-style tonkotsu, but I'm happy to see they tried something different for this event. They presented the soy milk tantanmen RED.

The Bowl
This was a bowl full of bright red, sesame-doused, oily soup. It was spicy with a nice covering of spring onions, and every bite of curly noodles came with a bagel's worth of sesame seeds. It was good on a cold day, and I would order it if they had it at their main shop.

Next on the docket was Mutahiro, a Tokyo ramen shop that just made its debut in Fukushima in Osaka. At time of writing I have only just barely visited the Osaka branch. At Ramen Sengoku their specialty was Tanmen, a vegetable-laden shio style.

The Bowl
After the heavy tantanmen, it was nice to have a simple bowl. It was a light shio, with a pound of vegetables in it. It was like eating a peppery vegetable stir fry cooked in a light broth. Add to that thick curly noodles from Tokyo star Nagi, and a piece of roasted chicken and you have the right way to cap off a ramen event.
