Dogenzaka Manmosu

In Shibuya looking for an open ramen shop, and I found Mammoth, or "Manmosu", a thick pork seafood tsukemen. I went with the noko tsukemen with thick, cereal noodles.

The Bowl
This bowl did everything to extreme: the soup was super rich and grainy with fish powder. The noodles were ultra-thick and dark, with a stretchy elastic resistance. Even the chashu came in the form of extra thick pieces, if not extra strongly flavored.

Kiraku

Tokyo! I am happy living in Osaka, but I still miss the capital city. On my trip this time I made sure to hit a couple of shops, starting with conveniently located chuka soba shop Kiraku. In an old diner-looking restaurant I ordered the wonton noodles.

The Bowl
This was a simple shoyu; clear brown, and light, if covered with a scalding layer of thin oil. There were plenty of veggies mixed in: bean sprouts, cabbage, and I think I tasted a hint of fried garlic. The noodles were thick, short ropes, and despite the broth being pretty thin, they matched the saltiness quite nicely. The chashu were tough slices of Chinese-style pork, and the wonton was a sweet interlude.

Would I Go Again?
This was a good bowl, but I still have so many bowls to try in Shibuya, let alone all of Tokyo.

Should You Go?
Anyone wanting an old-school bowl that won't leave you in pain, check it out.

Shinbusakiya

I had been traveling a lot recently, but the real journey was just about to begin. My younger brother visited me from New York, and since he came all the way from Japan, I needed to show him around more than than just Osaka. I made a trip to Tokyo already in December, but one more couldn't hurt, right?

There's not a lot of miso ramen in Osaka, which is a shame, but a trip to Tokyo gave me as good an excuse as any to force some on my brother. We hit up a place I liked a lot in Shibuya, hoping that a second tasting would be as good as the first.

The Bowl
Delicious miso. The hot soup was a little thin, but was still plenty rich. It tasted a little gingery, which is something I don't get in most bowls. The noodles were thick, curly, and firm. The toppings: sprouts, onions, menma, chashu, and my extra-ordered egg were all solid but nothing special.

Would I Go Again?
It's a pretty classic but very good miso soup, so probably.

Should You Go?
Shibuya is lacking in ramen shops and Shinbusakiya is great, so yes.
