Nidaime Ajito

Any day is a good day for spicy food! I stopped at Nidaime Ajito, a hole-in-the-wall tantanmen shop for their gold sesame tantanmen.

The Bowl
This was redder than many other bowls I've had, and tasted primarily of smokey rayu chili oil. The noodles were thin and straight, better for chewing than slurping. It reminded me of some of the noodle dishes I've had in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Tantanmen × Yume azito

In Kyoto without a ton of time, I looked for a place where I could get good bowl on my way to where I was going. I found Tantanmen x Yume azito, a basement shop hidden away not far from Shijo Station. I ordered the tantanmen, but not just any tantanmen: the white sesame soymilk tantanmen.

The Bowl
This was one thick bowl. The soymilk gave the broth a creamy feel, and it was almost like eating noodles soaked in a sesame paste gravy. The noodles themselves were in thin bunches that brought the milkiness of the broth with them. The soup was covered by ra-yu, too, which allowed it to become thinner and more drinkable as it went on, even if by the end it was mostly salt.

Would I Go Again?
I enjoyed the wacky bowl but I don't make it to Kyoto enough to merit another visit, even if the place hadn't closed for good.

Should You Go?
If it were still open I would recommend it for anyone who likes thick ramen with a bit of spice.

Kyo Tsukemen Tsurukame

A trip to Kyoto and a chance to try more Kyoto ramen! This time I visited Kyo Tsukemen Tsurukame and their Nishikyo miso tantan tsukemen.

The Bowl
Just as it looks in the photo above, this tantan tsukemen was more smooth than spicy. There was just a tickle of spice, which was fine since the sesame and rayu did the job of keeping the bowl flavorful and interesting. The noodles were fat and grainy, and there were thin slices of chashu, too, that were juicy and brimming with flavor.

Would I Go Again?
Yes.

はい。

Should You Go?
A good stop for anyone looking for something a little different in Kyoto.

Kitahachi Tantan

The Osaka Ekimae Buildings are always a good place to explore for food, ramen or otherwise. As much as I think I know the scene in Umeda, there are always shops in the basements of these buildings that I haven't heard of. Today I visited Kitahachi Tantan, a tantanmen specialty branch of the Kitano Hachibantei chain. I ordered their standard tantanmen, the Oriental Noodle.

The Bowl
Numbing pepper sansho fumes were coming off the bowl. There was a half-centimeter thick layer of clear oil encasing a hot pepper bowl of soup with cilantro. The short, curly noodles were well matched to the bowl - they picked up a lot of the spice and toppings without being overly oily. Each bite was a continuing descent into that numbing pepper zone where I can't taste anything any more. A bit much, but kind of fun.

Would I Go Again?
It was interesting but I'm not sure I would need to visit again.

Should You Go?
As it turns out it's closed, so that's out of the question.

They gave me some fruit at the end but I could barely taste it.

Shisen Ramen

I happened to be in Daito city for a non-ramen related event when I got hungry. My friend and I ended up happening upon this random little ramen joint called Shisen Ramen, or Sichuan Ramen. They were having a 300 yen sale on their assari shisen ramen, so that's what I ordered.

The Bowl
Little shops like this don't disappoint. The broth was clear and oily; kind of a mixture of tomato and ra-yu, an interesting taking on Sichuan style ramen. The noodles were thin and long, vaguely reminiscent of spaghetti. I wasn't expecting this kind of bowl from a Sichuan ramen shop, but it worked out.

Would I Go Again?
It was fine, but it's far.

Should You Go?
Anyone who lives around there can check it out for lunch.

Koshien

Japan is one of the biggest places for baseball in the world, and the most famous stadium in Japan is Koshien. Koshien is used for the two major high school tournaments that happen during the year, and otherwise it's used by the Hanshin Tigers. Due to my time in Tokyo, though, I'm a Tokyo Yakult Swallows fan.

When the Swallows score, they hold tiny umbrellas up in celebration

The concessions at Japanese stadiums aren't too bad. They have a variety of food, only a little more expensive than you'd found outside. At Koshien, they have different items based on each player on the team.

Feeling like some noodles, I ordered Uemoto's soupless tantanmen.

The Bowl
It was a hot day and the stadium was pretty packed with people, so I went with the cold version to cool me down. The noodles themselves were nice and chewy, but overall the mixture was lacking on flavor. If I had gone to a shop for this I may have been disappointed, but frankly a light mixture of cold, spicy, carbohydrates was just what the doctor ordered at this game.

Tantan

For today's trip I decided to go to Tantan in Tennoji, a sister shop to Senba Tantanmen in Yotsubashi. Just like the former shop, they had a variety of different styles, including a mild white sesame bowl. I had to go with the spicy one, though, so I went with the Taiwan-style red tantanmen.

The Bowl
As advertised, the bowl of ramen reminded me more of Taiwanese beef noodle soup than of traditional ramen. The broth was thin and dark, spicy, and with small pieces of pork and chives floating about. The noodles were short, curly, and chewy, and the miso diced pork was good, but the hard-boiled egg felt a bit out of place.

Would I Go Again?
It was good, but I don't think I'll make another stop.

Should You Go?
If you're looking for some Chinese-style tantanmen, check it out.

Musashibo

It was my last day in Hiroshima and it wasn't long before I had to make the train back to Osaka. I had already eaten spicy tsukemen that day, but it felt somehow like it was not enough. I consulted the map again, and discovered Musashibo, one of the few tantanmen places that was open on Sunday. This time I went with a paltry spiciness level 3.

The Bowl
Musashibo's tantanmen was a slew of short noodles in a spicy, red sauce. What made this bowl stand out more than others was the amount of sides they had. Three kinds of chili pepper were offered: green, red, and young, along with their house special that was a mixture. Of course I had to try all of them one by one. The green had a strong aroma, and its spice when straight to my nose. The red was crunchier, and had a bit more flavor to it. The young one was less spicy than the others, but had more peppery taste to it. I mixed and matched, and by the end could barely feel my tongue.

Would I Go Again?
Yes.

Should You Go?
Yes.

Suzurantei

After a night of drinking in Hiroshima, it was time for some food. I made a promise to myself this trip that I would eat more than my fair share of soupless tantanmen. I checked my map and noticed that a shop called Suzurantei was still open, so I went in and got tantanmen with an egg.

The Bowl
The noodles were extra thin, but still had a good chew to them. The spice this time was mostly pepper, but there was a bit of sansho mixed in for good measure. It was spicy in the right way, and there was a cinnamon aroma too. The whole mixture was smoothed out by the egg's glaze.

Would I Go Again?
Yeah, it was good.

Should You Go?
If you're out and about in Hiroshima, this place is a good place to stop before calling it.

Kinguken

It's time for another trip! I visited Hiroshima a year back and had some spicy tsukemen. I went back, but this time with a goal to have more, and try some of Hiroshima's famous soupless tantanmen. I had a map of a number of places, and as soon as I arrived in Hiroshima, I aimed to start eating. The first closest place was Za Nakamura.

But they were closed. I continued searching and stumbled upon a ramen alley.

No tantanmen there, though. I tried another place.

But no luck. Finally I made my way to Kinguken, a small chain of Hiroshima tantanmen shops. I ordered the tantanmen, at level three out of five spice.

The Bowl
I like the level of simplicity that was brought to my first bowl of Hiroshima soupless tantanmen. The noodles were thin and chewy, soaked in a fine spicy oil. With each bite, the sansho's buzz could be felt more and more. As soon as I ran out of noodles, they gave me a lump of rice to put in. It lacked the punch of the noodles, but combined with the leftover oil and a bit of vinegar, it was a sweet and refreshing way to cap it off.

Would I Go Again?
Yeah, it was good. But there are also so many other places to try.

Should You Go?
If you're visiting Hiroshima, Kinguken is a solid place to try Hiroshima tantanmen.

Ramen Sengoku Day 2

I wasn't initially planning on going to Ramen Sengoku twice, but when there are ten shops showing off their specialties, who am I to say no? The day previous I went by myself, but today I took a stop by with Philoramen.

First up today was Zundoya. I've always been a fan of Zundoya's dedication to Hakata-style tonkotsu, but I'm happy to see they tried something different for this event. They presented the soy milk tantanmen RED.

The Bowl
This was a bowl full of bright red, sesame-doused, oily soup. It was spicy with a nice covering of spring onions, and every bite of curly noodles came with a bagel's worth of sesame seeds. It was good on a cold day, and I would order it if they had it at their main shop.

Next on the docket was Mutahiro, a Tokyo ramen shop that just made its debut in Fukushima in Osaka. At time of writing I have only just barely visited the Osaka branch. At Ramen Sengoku their specialty was Tanmen, a vegetable-laden shio style.

The Bowl
After the heavy tantanmen, it was nice to have a simple bowl. It was a light shio, with a pound of vegetables in it. It was like eating a peppery vegetable stir fry cooked in a light broth. Add to that thick curly noodles from Tokyo star Nagi, and a piece of roasted chicken and you have the right way to cap off a ramen event.
