Kindoki

Golden Week means time to travel! I didn't have the week off, but just some extra days on the weekends, so a couple of Golden Weekend trips it was. The first was to Tottori. We visited the sand dunes, Mount Daisen, and a few other interesting places. While buying souvenirs on our last night, I spotted a phone strap of Chopper from One Piece eating a bowl of Tottori's famous gyukotsu beef bone ramen. I had never heard of it before, but speaking with the people at the information desk, they recommended Kindoki, a shop just down the road.

Information
Tottori-ken, Tottori-shi, Minamiyoshikata, 1

The Bowl
A sweet, solid shoyu, not unlike the other gyukotsu I've had before. The noodles were thin, curly, and short. The toppings were standard, but altogether it went down sweet, smooth, and easy.

Would I Go Again?
I don't know if I'll make it out to Tottori again, but if I do, I will eat gyukotsu ramen again.

Should You Go?
If you're in Tottori, check it out.

Oriental Cafe

It was a lazy Saturday afternoon and I had some free time to wander around. Horie is a good place to walk around on weekends, but they don't have a ton of ramen. I happened to pass a place called Oriental Cafe, though, which according to the signs in front of the shop, is known for their ramen and curry. The curry looked better, but I was in a ramen mood.

Information
ORIENTAL CAFE
Ōsaka-fu, Ōsaka-shi, Nishi-ku, Kitahorie, 1丁目16−25

The Bowl
Standard tonkotsu, through and through. This is the kind of ramen I would have been very happy with before I moved to Japan, but after eating at some three hundred or so different places, I can't quite appreciate any more. A thin and oily broth, with medium yellow noodles, and fatty, melty chashu.

Would I Go Again?
I might for the curry.

Should You Go?
It was a nice cafe, but don't go for the ramen.

Chiccho

I got off work on a Friday night and had some time before I had to meet my friend in Minami. What better place to go then to stop at a ramen shop on the walk south? Chiccho is a classic gyokai tonkotsu place that had been on my list for a night like this one.

Information
Ōsaka-fu, Ōsaka-shi, Kita-ku, Kamiyamachō, 6−2

The Bowl
A pretty good, rich gyokai tonkotsu. The noodles were long and fat, extra tasty with lemon. The chashu was super flavorful, and very juicy. All together a great bowl of tsukemen.

Would I Go Again?
Yes.

Should You Go?
If you're by Nakazakicho, it's a winner.

Ippinka

I had recently discovered a new Osaka food magazine, and much to my delight there were a number of suggestions of restaurants near my office. One of them was a hole-in-the-wall Chinese place with interesting-looking tantanmen, so my coworker and I checked it out during lunch.

Information
一品香
Ōsaka-fu, Ōsaka-shi, Kita-ku, Honjōnishi, 1丁目12−23

The Bowl
The bowl was interesting, definitely different from any other tantanmen I've had before. The broth was thin, and oily. It wasn't spicy, but it tasted like miso and was even a little sour. The noodles were chewy, and the chashu wasn't bad either.

Would I Go Again?
It's close, so I might.

Should You Go?
Nah, it's too out of the way.

Typhoon Gang

Nakazakicho is easy for me to get to, but still I find myself to lazy to walk over there. After a while of my coworker telling me to go eat at Typhoon Gang, I finished work early and visited the shop. I ordered the normal tsukemen, a gyokai chicken that is notably shrimpy.

Information

The Bowl
What a solid mix of shrimp and a more standard gyokai chicken tsukemen. The shrimp flakes intermingled with the broth and joined all the toppings; they wove between the noodles as they were dipped. The chashu was good, and the fried shrimp dumpling in the soup was even better. The bowl drained well with a wari-soup to suck up the last remaining shrimp flakes.

Would I Go Again?
Yeah, that place was good and convenient.

Should You Go?
Yes.

Menya Chika

It had been a while since I had been in the greater Tenma area. My friend and I met up to go walking around on a Sunday night. We decided to make our destination the delicious-looking but far out Menya Chika. Their main dish is a shio tsukemen, which we both, perhaps foolishly, ordered in large size.

Information
Ōsaka-fu, Ōsaka-shi, Kita-ku, Kokubunji, 2丁目2−41

The Bowl
The broth was light and salty, with pieces of fried garlic floating in it. And also salt. A lot of salt. There were a few slices of decent chashu, and the egg and long noodles were pretty good, but what stood out most was the saltiness of the whole thing. Even the wari-soup required a chaser of water.

Would I Go Again?
Too salty.

Should You Go?
Nah, there are other good shops in the area though.

Zekkocho Ramen

One place I know I can come back to time and time again is Nipponbashi's Ramen Gekijo. It changes every few months to a new shop with new types of ramen. Last year I visited the beef-bone shop Gyukotsuo and then later I went to the Hakata style tonkotsu spin-off Aozora. I missed the Italian style place in the winter, but finally I had another chance to go back and try another Hakata style shop, Zekkocho Ramen.

Information
4-10-9 Nipponbashi

The Bowl
It was a standard but good, thin, rich tonkotsu bowl. They had recommended the fat noodles, so I had chosen those, and they were firm and curly. Two chewy slices of chashu and a smattering of kikurage topped off the bowl.

Would I Go Again?
Yeah, it's pretty good and there were a couple other kinds of ramen that sounded interesting.

Should You Go?
At time of writing the next shop has opened up at Ramen Gekijo, so you can't go.
