Nakamuraya

Finally, hanami season! The cherry blossoms were blooming, and I was off to visit Osaka Castle Park to drink in the sun and stare at flowers. The snacks people usually bring to those gatherings was not enough, though, so I stopped at Nakamuraya in Senba on the way. Nakamuraya is a Gifu-based set of ramen shops, known for their sweet and sour tsukemen.

ようやく花見になりました！桜が咲いて、大阪城公園に飲みに行きました。花見の集まりにはみんなお菓子とか持って行きますけど、ちゃんと食事食べたかったので船場にある中村屋に寄りました。中村屋は岐阜には本店があって、甘くて酸っぱいつけ麺で有名です。

The Bowl
The soup was light, sweet, sour, and even a little spicy. It was different from other gyokai tonkotsu I've had before, and tasted good with the extra-long, chewy noodles. All of the toppings tasted good in the sweet and sour soup too; the menma, egg, and melty chashu.

スープが甘くて酸っぱくてちょっと辛かったです。他の魚介豚骨に比べると違っておいしかったです。麺は長くてもちもちでした。とろけるチャーシューもスープの味を吸収して、さらにおいしくなりました。

Would I Go Again?
It was different, and good. Maybe I'll bring a friend there.

普通じゃなくてうまかったです。ひょっとしたら友達を連れて行くかもしれません。

Mennoya

When I first moved to Osaka, I spoke with my coworkers about my quest to kill myself eating ramen in Japan. One of my seniors sympathized, and told me about how he had been there before. With a car, he could travel all over Kansai tasting a new bowl each day. But one shop had captivated him more than any other. Uehonmachi's Mennoya. They offered a number of interesting options, but I went with the standard shoyu.

大阪に引っ越ししたばかりなときに同僚と一緒に話して、ラーメンを食べる任務を説明しました。ラーメンが好きな先輩にいろいろ言われました。その人もラーメンが大好きで車でいろいろな関西の店行けました。最後に、上本町には一番好きな店が見つかりました。麺乃家でした。いろいろなラーメンがあったんですが、味元のしょう油にしました。

The Bowl
Super light, easy to drink, interesting, and very good. The last time I'd had a simple broth knock me off my feet so much was Shiogensui's shio. The noodles were thin, flat, and light. The chashu and menma also went down easy, but were very tasty.

あっさりで飲みやすくて面白くておいしいスープでした。あっさりスープがこんなにおいしかったのが塩元帥の塩しか覚えられません。麺は細くて平たいでした。チャーシューもメンマも食べやすくてめっちゃうまかったです。

Menya Takechan

I had walked most of the way and was pretty hungry. I didn't have much to eat at home and was feeling pretty lazy anyway. There was a ramen shop right near Sakuragawa I had never tried before, so then was as good a time as any. Takechan advertised their gyokai tsukemen, so that's what I got.

歩いて帰る途中におなかがすいていました。家には食べ物はそんなになかったんですが、桜川の近くにある行ったことないラーメン屋さんがあったので行ってみようと思っていました。魚介系つけ麺が一番人気と言われたのでそれにしました。

The Bowl
To be honest I wasn't expecting a lot from this local joint, but what I got was good. The fishy broth was thin, but just thick enough to go with the thick, chewy noodles. There were big pieces of chashu waiting in the soup, and those were quite good.

正直に言うとこんなローカル的な店を見ると普通っぽいイメージがしますけど、つけ麺がおいしかったです。魚っぽいスープが薄めでしたけど太麺によく合わせました。スープにある大きいチャーシューもうまかったです。

Kunimaru

New shop alert! Kunimaru, a new miso ramen shop opened up right near work in Nakazakicho. Sometimes the birth of a new ramen shop means saying goodbye to an old one. I hope you fare well in the south, Ichimonya.

おニュー店登場！中崎町の近くにある味噌専門店国丸が開催されました。たまに、新しい店が出るときには、古い店にさよならと言わないとだめです。南で頑張って、一悶屋！

The Bowl
A rich, thin, but hot and good miso broth. The noodles were medium, curly, chewy, and yellow. The chashu was light, buttery, and really delicious. The sprouts, corn, and ground pork made me reminiscent of my trip to Hokkaido a few months earlier.

濃厚で熱い味噌スープでした。麺が黄色で縮れ麺でした。チャーシューが食べやすくてバッターっぽくてめっちゃおいしかったです。コーンともやしと一緒に食べたら北海道の旅行に懐かしいですね。

Would I Go Again?
It was good miso, which is a rarity in Osaka. And they had multiple different styles of miso. I'll be back.

味噌が大阪に珍しいしいろいろな味噌の種類が会ったのでまた行きたいです。

Menya Arashimaru

I was visiting Arashiyama with some friends of mine and one of them saw a little girl lifting something heavy to the river. She helped the girl out, and started talking to the girl as we all headed towards the main road in town. The girl's parents worked at a ramen shop, apparently, and she invited all of us to try some of her family's food. A happy story with a ramen ending.

友達と一緒に嵐山に遊びに行くときに川の方で重い物を運んでいたちっちゃい女の子を気づきました。友達が手伝ってあげて一緒に大通りまで行きました。その子どもの両親がラーメン屋をやったと言われて、底で食べることに招待してもらいました。

Konshinya

When I was visiting Denden Town with my brother, I noticed there was a ramen shop I didn't recognize before. A Yokohama-style iekei ramen shop; a true rarity in Kansai. I had only ever been to one before, and it had left something to be desired. What would iekei chain Konshinya bring to the table?

前兄と一緒にデンデンタウンに遊びに行った時に見たことないラーメン屋さんに気づきました。関西に珍しい家系店でした。大阪には一回しか行ったことなくて、もっと行ってみたかったです。家系チェン店魂心家はどうでしょうか？

The Bowl
It was a solid but not amazing iekei bowl. Rich, shoyu tonkotsu broth, but not overwhelmingly heavy like some of the bowls I'd had in Tokyo. The noodles were short and firm, and were accompanied by seaweed, chashu, greens, and something that looked like quail eggs.

おいしい家系スープでした。濃厚な豚骨しょう油で東京で家系より飲みやすかったです。麺が短くて、あと海苔、チャーシュー、野菜、ウズラの卵っぽいやつも乗っていました。

Would I Go Again?
If I want to show a friend in Kansai iekei, this is where I'll take them.

Menya Kazuya

A hungover Saturday means it's time for some hearty ramen.  I didn't want to venture too far, so I headed to a place in Nipponbashi I had passed by several times and meant to go to - Menya Kazuya.

土曜日の二日酔いときにはラーメンがいいですね。そんなに遠く行く雪がなかったので前日本橋にある行くつもりだった店に行きました。

The Bowl
The broth was thin, but flavorful and very fishy. The noodles were medium-fat and chewy. There were several pieces of chashu and menma that was weirdly covered in sesame seeds. Everything was OK and nothing was great; there wasn't really anything special to report about this bowl.

スープは薄めで魚の味が強かったです。麺が太かったです。チャーシューがいっぱいあって、メンマにゴマがのりました。まあまあおいしかったですけど特徴はそんなにありませんでした。
