Misen

In February, I had a trip where I'd have to leave from Nagoya airport. Waking up early to take the shinkansen early just to get on an airplane is a bit of a nightmare, but I knew that at least I could get something good out of it. Chubu Airport has a ramen street, home to a couple of places I don't know very well, and one branch of Misen. I love Misen, so I had to stop by.

The Bowl
Clear, spicy broth. Thin, chewy noodles. Tons of oil and chunks of ground pork. It's everything I had the first time, letting the spices clear my senses and the oil clear my colon. Maybe not the best idea right before a flight, though.

Bokkoshi

One Friday night I ran into a friend in Shinsaibashi. We had some shopping to do and then decided to get dinner. Without any other ideas of where to go, I headed us towards the new Namba branch of Juso's shop Bokkoshi. They do a chicken paitan, so that's what I ordered.

The Bowl
The broth was thick and creamy, it was less like a typical ramen broth, and more like a cream pasta. The noodles were long and flat, and covered in the milky sauce, they might have been easier to eat with a fork than with chopsticks. Light chicken chashu, onions, and parsley, made for an unusual if delicious bowl of ramen.

Would I Go Again?
I'd like to.

Tsukemen Suzume

It was a Sunday night and I was hungry for some tsukemen. I've hit most of the places close to where I live, so I looked south to a branch of a shop that I visited before and had high praise for. Tsukemen Suzume has delivered high quality tsukemen before, and two and a half years ago I settled for the standard tsukemen, but this time I made sure to get the spicy one. Their spice scale goes from 1x to 15x, and though the waitress recommended 5x, I had to be stupid and go for 10x.

The Bowl
A thick, spicy gyokai tonkotsu like I expected. It was spicy, but not super spicy; maybe I should have gone with the 15x spiciness. The noodles were super thick, and there were spicy pieces of chashu littered in the hot soup. After filling myself on noodles and pork, I poured the yuzu-based wari-soup in for one final, citrus kick.

Would I Go Again?
I have before and I will again.

Mondorian

In the beginning of February a new shop opened up on Nakanoshima. Called Sekai Ichi Himana Ramenya, it means "The World's Most Idle Ramen Shop", and it's from the same people who brought us Juso's Kuso Oyaji Saigo no Hitofuri and Nishinakajima's Jinrui Mina Menrui. I walked over there...

...only to find it was closed. However, they would be doing a collaboration with Mondorian, recent successor to Kinguemon's Honmachi branch's location. Normally they offered various shoyu and tonkotsu bowls, but today just one was on sale: an event-only chicken tonkotsu bowl. Having walked around looking for something to eat all day, I strode in victoriously to claim my prize.

The Bowl
Rich, tonkotsu flavors with a giant piece of chashu. Well, I can see where the similarity to Jinrui Mina Menrui comes from. The broth was good, and came with a variety of toppings, including menma, onions, and parsley. The noodles were medium, straight, and firm. I wasn't blown away but it was a solid, rich bowl.

In the end they gave me a coupon to use another time. Bonus!

Makotoya

Late on a Sunday night my friend visiting from out of town and I were looking for a new bowl of ramen to try. We were in the Shinsaibashi area, and didn't have a lot of options, but one place I've always overlooked was Makotoya. A beef bone ramen shop, it looked generic and I had heard middling things, but this was the day I would give it a try.

The Bowl
The milky white broth was a beef bone gyukotsu base, with a shoyu tare. It was pretty generic as I expected, but not bad. It bared more than a passing resemblance to tonkotsu shop Tobei. The thin hakata-style noodles were pretty good, and so was the extra half-boiled egg I added for my ramen.

Would I Go Again?
It was fine but not amazing; I probably won't go again.

Should You Go?
There are more interesting shops in the area.

Hosomichi

A lazy Sunday in early February I decided to go on a long walk to Kyobashi. There was a ramen shop there that piqued my interest, and thankfully they were open on Sundays. Hosomichi is a small shop in the main shopping arcade that offers a unique item: Motsu, or offal, tsukemen. Some people hate the taste or texture of offal, but I love its chewy juiciness, so I stepped inside the shop to have a taste.

A variety spices for the meal
The Bowl
Served in a metal bowl to keep the soup hot, this tsukemen really was distinct. The broth was a hot and salty gyokai torigara soup, and the noodles were even more different from standard bowls. Most ramen noodles are made with lye, an alkaline chemical compound that makes them stretchier. Hosomichi, however, insists on only using water, flour, and salt, in their noodles, making them light and clear, but as elastic as good udon. Combine that with the house hachimi they provided, and they tasted delicious too. Of course there was also the namesake motsu in the soup, which while very chewy, was extra juicy as I hoped due to the combination of the offal's natural flavors mixed with the soup.

Would I Go Again?
I'd like to.
